We have always said that having a piano or keyboard at home for students to practice is a key to their success with music lessons.
For a long time, our first step was to recommend smaller keyboards. But that was when a 61-key piano keyboard cost $40 and the cheapest full 88-key piano keyboard was well over $200.
Today, the gap is much smaller. So small, in fact, that there are few reasons we see to recommend a smaller piano keyboard. Compact keyboards do save space, and still most beginners (up through our first 3 levels) simply don’t need a full-size piano.
It also remains true that smaller keyboard are still less expensive apples to apples feature-wise.
But these days we’re only talking a difference of around $30 to $100 rather than the $200+ difference we saw in years past.
Below is a list of great full 88-key starter keyboards that will be perfectly suitable for beginner and early intermediate students.

Mastering 88-Keys on a Budget
Alesis Recital Play 88-Key Piano Keyboard
Alesis is well known for making quality electronic instruments such as keyboard, synthesizers, and even electronic drum kits. They have both professional instruments and beginner instruments. And while this is truly a beginner instrument, it is well-worth the consideration for a young beginner.
While few beginner students will need 88 keys on their piano keyboard, it offers student the opportunity to truly understand and explore the instrument they are learning.
This keyboard that is the size of a full piano is not only one of the most affordable 88-key options currently available, it is also from a very trusted brand.
That said, at about $134, this keyboard is still very basic. It does have important features like full-size keys and touch sensitivity, allowing students to play different dynamics. However, it is notably missing any sort of added weight to the keys.
Young students might actually benefit from the easier touch of this instrument, but as student advance into intermediate and advanced levels, they will begin to crave a practice piano with weighted or hammer-action keys.
A Small Upgrade for a Stand and a Case
Alesis Recital Play 88-Key Piano Keyboard Bundle
Most of the keyboards here have package, bundle, or kit options that include a keyboard stand and a carrying bag or bench for less than the cost of purchasing these items separately.
In the case of the Alesis Recital Play, the option above is for the keyboard alone with few frills. By standard, the only accessory the keyboard above includes is an attachable music stand.
However, for just $55 more than the keyboard alone Alesis’s bundle option ($189) includes everything from a keyboard stand, sustain pedal, headphones, and even a carrying bag.
The only extra that you will need is a seat. You can buy a bench separately or just use a chair.
The Cheapest 88-Key Option Worth Considering
The Donner brand has only been on the scene since 2012, but they have made a strong statement in terms of affordable quality instruments.
This 88-key piano keyboard comes with the same basic features as the Alesis Recital Play listed above. It too has full-size keys and touch sensitivity.
It too is a very basic instrument without weighted keys or a hammer-action feel. But it is perfect for any beginner student on a budget.
Also, the $130 purchase price of this instrument itself includes a convenient carry case and sustain pedal, which are normally accessories that are only available with a kit or bundle.
The Most Affordable 88-Key Package Option
The only essentials missing from Donner’s 88-key piano keyboard listed above are a keyboard stand and a bench.
And, for only $10 more, you can get the stand too as part of this bundle.
As with the Alesis bundle, it is missing a bench. So, you will still need to get this separately or use your own chair or stool from around your house.
But, $140 for most everything you need to get started is quite a good deal!
